Summer is here! The sun has been shining and, here in Chicago, it’s been downright hot on a few occasions.
Unlike years past, I won’t spend too much time talking about sun-protection.
Just a word of advice: There is no such thing as a “healthy” tan. Tanning
damages your skin. How about using some of the AMAZING self tanners that are on
the market! I recommend going to
www.sunless.com and reading up on all of them before you buy. The experts
there will tell you which sunless tanners work best on your skin type and
pigment level!
That was painless, yes? OK. Since normally I spend pages telling what to do with your skin in the summer, this year I intend to mix it up and tell you what NOT to do!
These are the top 3 things that, when mixed with sun exposure, can become a damaging cocktail for your skin:
1) Vitamin A derivative (includes Retin-A, retinol)
OOF. Vitamin A derivatives are fantastic for skin. Until you play beach volleyball without a hat and without consistently re-applying sunscreen (SPF 30, please). Products that contain retinols are meant to increase cellular turnover at a fairly steady clip. This means that fresh skin is constantly being exposed to the elements. This skin is highly photo-sensitive and will burn quite easily (i.e. within minutes). If you anticipate being in the sun often this summer, discontinue use of these products and start up again in the fall!
2) Alpha Hydroxy and Beta Hydroxy Acids
These acids are also used to increase cellular turnover, and in an ironic twist, they are often the main weapon used in reversing sun damage. A recent study by the FDA’s Office of Women’s Health found that after 4 weeks of AHA application, the volunteer’s sensitivity to the sun increased by nearly 20%. That means the sun is going to affect your skin faster and with more force than if you weren’t using AHAs and BHAs.
3) Alcohol
It’s not topical but it can have a HUGE effect on the skin during the summer months. First, it is dehydrating. When you are sweating up a storm, the last thing your skin needs in another way to lose fluid. Plus, when consumed in larger quantities, it can make one lose track of time and forget to reapply sunscreen, resulting in a bigger problem than a hangover! Drink responsibly!
Be Skin Smart and Safe this summer!! Have a great time and, as always, let me know if you have questions!
Thanks!
